AMES, Iowa – The Marquette men’s basketball team begins the biggest week of its non-conference season with a tough road test at Iowa State on Wednesday night in Ames, Iowa.

The Golden Eagles (8-0) are ranked fifth in the Associated Press Top 25 and fourth in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll. The Cyclones (5-1) are ranked sixth in the AP poll and fifth in the USA TODAY rankings.

Kam Jones helps Marquette tie the game

Kam Jones started 2-for-12 and Marquette’s largest deficit was 13 points.

But Jones scored three straight times and the Golden Eagles went on a 10-0 run to tie the game at 61-61 with 9:07 left.

Chase Ross missed the second half with an ankle injury

Marquette’s Chase Ross was ruled out for the remainder of the game after suffering a left ankle injury in the first half.

After halftime he returned to the bench wearing a walking boot.

Keshon Gilbert had 18 points and Iowa State led 46-37 at halftime

Keshon Gilbert had 18 points and Iowa State shot 18 for 28 to take a 46-37 halftime lead.

Freshman guard Damarius Owens had nine points for MU, making all three of his three-point attempts. He is 7 of 7 from distance this season.

Chase Ross leaves with an ankle injury

With Sean Jones and Zaide Lowery unavailable due to injuries, MU did not have to lose any additional players.

But Chase Ross injured his left ankle midway through the first half. He went back to the locker room with team coach Kenny Wilka.

Zaide Lowery will be re-evaluated next week after suffering a knee injury

MU sophomore guard Zaide Lowery left Saturday’s win over Western Carolina with a painful knee injury.

The 1.90 meter tall Lowery was seriously injured and suffered a sprain in his left knee. He was on crutches for several days following the injury, but was not using them Wednesday at Hilton Coliseum.

MU said Lowery will also miss Saturday’s game against Wisconsin. He will be reevaluated next week when the Golden Eagles play in Dayton on Dec. 14.

Milan Momcilovic had the best game for Iowa State at the Maui Invitational

Former Pewaukee High School star Milan Momcilovic has caught the attention of NBA scouts with his size and shooting ability for Iowa State.

The 6-foot-8 forward will be an important defensive player for MU. Momcilovic had his best game for the Cyclones when he hit six three-pointers and scored 24 points as Iowa State defeated Colorado on Nov. 27 in the Cyclones’ third and final game at the Maui Invitational.

Iowa State-Marquette prediction

If you like hassling and hustling the defense then this is the game for you as both teams are among the best in the country at creating turnovers. The Cyclones will be aggressive in getting the ball out of Kam Jones’ hands, so Ben Gold and David Joplin will have to be ready to shoot when they’re open. Iowa State’s Hilton Magic at home should give the Cyclones an edge in this great Big East-Big 12 matchup.
