Stephen Curry isn’t ruling out the door on potentially playing on the same team with LeBron James in the NBA, but he acknowledged the likelihood of it happening before either of them retires is slim.

Speaking to ESPN’s Malika Andrews on Tuesday’s episode of NBA today (starts at :55 seconds) Curry said a pairing with James “probably” won’t happen.

“Probably not, but I think you just leave the what-ifs and all that to the platform that people want to talk about it on. We’re just having fun,” he said.

The Golden State Warriors have at least explored the possibility of bringing Curry and James on the same team.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski and Ramona Shelburne reported that the Warriors tried to convince James and the Los Angeles Lakers to consider a trade in February, but the talks went nowhere when James’ camp told Golden State Governor, Joe Lacob, and told general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. that their client had “no interest” in dealing.

James could have forced his way to the Warriors in the offseason when he was a free agent. Golden State tried to make a big splash with a strong push for Paul George, who was close to being finalized before talks with the Los Angeles Clippers fell through.

It’s not hard to imagine a scenario where the Warriors would pivot to James and potentially sign and trade with the Lakers for James if he really wanted to leave.

Instead, James chose to stay with the Lakers on a two-year, $101.4 million contract with a full no-trade clause. His contract includes a player option for 2025-26, so he could be back on the market next summer if he decides to do so.

ESPN’s Brian Windhorst noted this on the December 11 episode Stand up that James was among the players on Golden State’s trade radar ahead of the February trade deadline, but also added that James had no interest in being traded.

Barring a surprising change from James, fans have only been able to see him alongside Curry in a competitive setting over the summer when they played on Team USA.

The results were spectacular: The USA went 6-0 en route to the gold medal. Curry scored a combined 60 points in the semifinals and gold medal game. James, who was named MVP of the men’s tournament, recorded a triple-double with 16 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists in the semifinal win over Serbia.

As much fun as it would be to see what a Curry-James pairing could accomplish, even at this late stage in both their careers, the likelihood of it happening was always slim, long before Curry admitted it.

Curry and James will have their 53rd head-to-head meeting on Christmas Day when the Warriors host the Lakers at Chase Center.
