Steph Curry’s Warriors suffer a historic 51-point loss to the Grizzlies in Dennis Schröder’s debut

A strong contender for the worst team-wide performance of the NBA season, the Warriors were outscored by 51 points on Thursday night in Memphis, getting next to nothing offensively from their veterans and providing zero resistance defensively in a 144-93 loss to the Grizzlies .

Both of Steph Curry’s points came from the free throw line. Otherwise, he went scoreless and missed all seven of his shots in the least productive 24 minutes of his career. He hadn’t scored two or fewer goals in a game since 2018. Before Thursday night, he had never failed to make a field goal in a regular-season game when he had at least 12 minutes under his belt.

It was the fourth-worst loss in franchise history for the Warriors, but they’ve had an even worse loss recently. They beat the Celtics by 52 points in Boston last March.

The Warriors’ complete no-show on Thursday came at a particularly surprising time. They were rested – having played just one game in the last seven days – and introduced a much-touted reinforcement that has turned heads for the organization in recent days. The Warriors traded for Dennis Schröder over the weekend, believing the guard, who scores 18 points per game, could provide a boost to their struggling offense.

Trade Notes: How can the arrival of Dennis Schröder help Steph Curry and the Warriors?

Steve Kerr started Schröder alongside Curry in his debut. He shot an abysmal 1-for-9 in the first half and finished the game 2-for-12. Combined with Curry, the starter missed all 10 of his three-pointers. Schröder’s five points were fewer than all but one of his 23 games for the Brooklyn Nets. He also had four of the team’s 17 turnovers.

Draymond Green’s protocols weren’t much help either. Kerr brought him back into the starting lineup ahead of Jonathan Kuminga, who has started the last six games, as he looked to restore his defensive identity after the Mavericks put up 143 points on them on Sunday. Green was ineffective early on, committing four fouls in 10 minutes in the first half. He went scoreless, had four turnovers and the Warriors scored 42 points in his 19 minutes.

The Warriors’ defense, which was second to the Thunder in defensive rating for much of the start of the season, has given up a total of 287 points over the last two games. They have fallen to seventh in defensive rating and continue to fall in the Western Conference standings. After a 12-3 start, they are 2-9 in their last 11 games and are currently 10th at 14-12 with a big road game at Minnesota on Saturday night.

“I know we’ll bounce back,” Kerr told reporters in Memphis. “I’m not worried about that. But we still have a lot to do to perform and learn how to perform under pressure, take care of the ball and take good shots.”
