The final seconds of the Warriors’ 91-90 NBA Cup loss to the Houston Rockets on Wednesday were filled with controversial decisions.

Gary Payton II’s frantic pass while lying flat on his stomach. One or two loose ball fouls in favor of the Rockets. And perhaps what went under the radar because of what happened immediately afterward, Steph Curry’s stepback 3 with nearly 10 seconds left on the shot clock.

After the game, Curry was asked if he left too early or if he just liked the look of it enough to make it worth it.

“Both,” Curry told reporters. “If you can find some space, I’ll take that shot all the time.” And obviously the way it went turned the 50-50 ball into an unreal loose-ball foul that changed the game . So definitely probably a few seconds too early.

“I like the recording. If I make it, we’ll be on a plane to Vegas. So I can live with that, but it’s a tough finish.”

With a three-second difference between the shot clock and the game clock, the Warriors guard could have given Houston little to no time to react if Curry had waited until the last moment to fire a shot.

It’s a fascinating dilemma that probably only affects him.

This is Steph Curry, after all. There may not be another player on the planet who would enjoy the same benefit of the doubt in this situation. But it’s hard to call any Shot Curry takes a bad shot.

Still, it appears he has some regrets about that decision, which set off a disastrous chain of events for the Warriors’ NBA Cup title hopes.
