Steve Mensch, president of Tyler Perry Studios, dies at age 62 after a fatal plane crash

Steve Mensch, president and general manager of Tyler Perry Studios, has died. He was 62.

Mensch died in a plane crash, Perry representatives confirmed to Fox News Digital.

“We are incredibly saddened by the death of our dear friend Steve Mensch. Steve was a valued member of our team for more than eight years and was well-liked in the Atlanta community,” the statement said.

“It’s hard to imagine not seeing him smiling in the halls. We will miss him very much. Our condolences go out to his family as we all send our prayers to them.”

So far, no further fatalities have been reported in the plane crash. The cause of the crash is currently under investigation.

Mensch was the pilot of a single-seat plane that crashed in Florida, a source close to the studios confirmed.

Officers were on scene around 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, when a “small engine aircraft accident” occurred near the intersection of Highway 19 and Longfellow St. in Homosassa, Fla., the office said of the sheriff of Citrus Country.

Mensch has been president of Tyler Perry Studios since 2016.

He oversaw day-to-day operations at the 300-acre studio property in Atlanta, Georgia, considered the first major film studio on the East Coast, according to his LinkedIn profile.

“Steve Mensch is considered one of the most influential people in the Georgia film and television production industry. “He has leadership experience in operations, strategic planning, budgeting, business development and marketing at some of the largest companies in the industry,” says bio read in part.

Mensch leaves behind his wife and three children.

News of Mensch’s death comes after Perry halted an $800 million studio expansion due to AI advances.

Earlier this year, the “Mea Culpa” director had planned to expand his backlot by another 12 stages. However, after OpenAI unveiled its new tool Sora, which can create visually complex shots of subjects and their backgrounds, it thwarted Perry’s project.

“All of this is pending right now and indefinitely because of Sora and what I see,” he told The Hollywood Reporter in February. “Over the last year I had learned that this was coming, but I had no idea what it was capable of until I saw the demonstrations recently. It’s shocking to me.”

At the time, Perry recognized the technology’s advantage in reducing location and set costs. He’s also aware it could cost some people their jobs.

“I immediately started thinking about everyone in the industry who would be affected, including actors, grip, electrical, transport, sound and editors. And when I look at this, I think this will touch every corner of our industry,” he explained.
