Steve Sarkisian blasts the officials at halftime of the SEC championship game between Texas and Georgia

Interviews with college football coaches before halftime of a game can often be numbing.

As his Texas team fights for a conference title on Saturday, Steve Sarkisian made a notable exception.

Although the No. 2 Longhorns led No. 5 Georgia 6-3 at halftime of the 2024 SEC Championship Game on Saturday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Sarkisian’s team was mired in mistakes in the first 30 minutes of the game, ending the first half with eight penalties for 80 yards.

When asked by ESPN’s Laura Rutledge how Texas is cleaning up its mess, Sarkisian gave a succinct and pointed answer.

“Well, hopefully one day they’ll call them out for an arrest too,” Sarkisian said, without elaborating or commenting beyond his brief statement.

Unlike the Longhorns, Georgia only had two penalties for 19 yards in the first two quarters of the game.

The penalty imbalance was one of several factors that led to coach Kirby Smart’s team trailing by just three points after being statistically dominated in the first half. Texas outscored the Bulldogs by a 260-54 margin in the first two quarters. Several Longhorns penalties negated big plays that ultimately could have led to valuable points in a low-scoring game.

Texas entered Saturday ranked 62nd out of 134 FBS teams with 50.3 penalty yards per game.
