Stevenson is open to Boxing Haney at 140

Shakur Stevenson is open to boxing Devin Haney in junior welterweight.

The pair were linked to a fight at 135 pounds when Haney was the undisputed lightweight champion. Haney reportedly made Shakur a 25 percent offer that would have given him a shot at all the belts. But Shakur reportedly rejected the offer because it didn’t reflect his true value. He chose the WBC mandatory route. But Haney would hit Vasily Lomachenko before clearing his belts to move up to 140 pounds. Since then, Shakur has won the WBC lightweight title Edwin de los Santos for the free belt. Stevenson has since left Top Rank as he signed a contract with Matchroom Boxing.

Stevenson’s injury

He should fight Joe Cordina in his first fight as part of the promotion. However, he retired after sustaining a hand injury during sparring. He was on track William Zepeda next year, which is mandatory for his WBC belt. But the Mexican also pulled out of any possible fight after confirming he had suffered a hand injury.

Stevenson will now compete Floyd Schofield on February 22nd. A win over Schofield could lead to a bigger fight. Gervonta Davis has already announced that he will be retiring next year as he wants to fight three times. So it remains a race against time to win this fight. If he can’t win this fight, Shakur is willing to tip the scales up to 140 pounds to face Haney.

Haney hasn’t been in the ring since his no-contest against him Ryan Garcia. Haney was dropped three times in this fight as he lost a majority decision. However, the result was uncontested when Garcia failed the VADA tests for Ostarine. Shakur and Haney could have a falling out as they are both close to Matchroom. Although Haney is not signed to Matchroom, he works with them on a fight-by-fight basis. Haney might also like this fight since Shakur would be moving up to 140. Stevenson isn’t the biggest puncher either.

Shakur responds

Still, Shakur can’t ignore Schofield. Schofield is a rising talent with an undefeated record of 22-0. He has secured his first title shot, which means the pressure is on Shakur. Stevenson is returning from hand surgery and there are doubts about whether he can impose his style. Stevenson has had problems with injuries recently, as he was also injured in the fight against Edwin de Los Santos. But if Shakur comes through as expected, fans could see this fight.
