Storms disrupt travel on Christmas Eve in Texas

The Storm Prediction Center has issued a Level 1 (out of 5) severe weather risk extending from Interstate 30 in East Texas to Interstate 10 west of Houston.

TYLER, Texas – Beware travelers, storms could disrupt travel on Christmas Eve.

Strong storms will devastate a large portion of Texas on Christmas Eve. These will bring gusty winds, hail and isolated downpours to the eastern half of the Lone Star State. Travel is likely to be affected. According to the Texas Department of Insurance, 85% of weather-related accidents in Texas are due to rain. Therefore, it is important to remain weather aware on the roads.

More than 10 million Texans are at risk of severe storms on Tuesday. The Storm Prediction Center has issued a Level 1 (out of 5) severe weather risk extending from Interstate 30 in East Texas to Interstate 10 west of Houston. Drivers should pay attention to isolated severe storms. Gusty winds and small hail are the biggest dangers.


The storms will hit North Texas Tuesday morning. Travelers flying from Dallas may experience minor delays due to weather. Travelers should check with their airline for the most up-to-date flight information.

The brunt of storm activity will shift south of Interstate 20 during the afternoon and slowly move southward through the evening. Over an inch of rain is expected to fall near the highway between Fort Worth and Shreveport, Louisiana.


Heavy rain and gusty winds will affect Houston overnight. The National Weather Service in Houston expects “strong wind gusts, light hail and locally heavy rain” Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.

  • Partly cloudy morning, 20% chance of rain after sunset

Waco-

  • High: 70°
  • Low: 53°
  • Rain: 60%
