Storms will hit the Brazos Valley again on Thursday

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – After a stormy Christmas Eve, we’ll get a brief respite for Christmas Day before the atmosphere triggers more storms on Thursday.

SET UP:

A warm and humid air mass will linger over the Brazos Valley for the remainder of 2024, providing a favorable environment for active weather. A deep low-pressure system will move over North Texas Thursday afternoon, helping to kick-start storms as a cold front trails behind. While there is a risk of severe weather throughout the Brazos Valley, there is a greater risk east of Highway 6.

TIMING:

Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected to begin Thursday morning. The amount of rain we receive earlier in the day will be a key factor in the intensity of the afternoon/evening storms. With this in mind, model data is available as of Wednesday evening that suggests storms will increase throughout the afternoon before moving eastward toward the evening.

EFFECTS:

The development of a thunderstorm requires three key ingredients: moisture, instability and lift. All of this will happen across the Brazos Valley on Thursday. A fourth ingredient often associated with severe weather is also present – shear. Strong low-altitude shear will promote the development of damaging winds and hail, along with rotating supercells that can produce tornadoes. All serious dangers are possible. While this is not a widespread problem, we will be monitoring it very closely.
