Stowaway caught on flight to Paris identified as Russian national

The woman who stowed away from New York to Paris is 57-year-old Svetlana Dali.

She remains in France after allegedly causing a disturbance on a flight back to the US.

Ms. Dali, whose identity was confirmed by CBS, boarded a Delta Airlines flight from New York’s JFK airport to Paris’s Charles de Gaulle airport last week without a boarding pass.

She was taken into custody upon arrival in France.

French National Police said the woman was of Russian nationality and had been refused entry to France because she did not have a visa. She was not charged.

Ms. Dali managed to get through a body scanner using advanced imaging technology at JFK Airport and evade document and ID checks during the security process.

In a statement to the BBC’s news partner CBS, a TSA spokesperson confirmed that “a person without a boarding pass was physically screened with no prohibited items. The individual bypassed two identity verification and boarding status stations and boarded the aircraft.”

However, it remains unclear how she was able to get through and board the plane.

“Nothing is more important than issues of safety,” Delta said in a statement. “Therefore, Delta is conducting a comprehensive investigation into what may have happened and will work with other aviation stakeholders and law enforcement agencies to this end.”

The Guardian reported that Ms Dali moved from one bathroom to another on board and never sat down – until flight attendants noticed.

A social media video posted by a passenger shows the moment a captain told the plane that officers were coming to remove the woman.

“Guys, this is the captain, we’re just waiting for the police to come on board,” he said in the video. “Maybe they’re here now and have told us to keep everyone on the plane until we can deal with the extra passenger on the plane.”

A man on the flight shared cellphone video with CNN showing the woman, who remains in France, causing a disturbance on another flight that was taking her back to New York.

He said she repeated, “I don’t want to go back to the United States. Only a judge can force me to return to the United States.”

The BBC has not independently verified the videos and it is unclear what the woman meant.
