‘Stressed’ Amazon driver leaves 80 packages in Massachusetts woods during holiday shipping rush

Just days before Christmas, dozens of Amazon packages were discovered abandoned in the woods of a Massachusetts town, but it wasn’t the Grinch who stole the gifts — it was a delivery driver who said the stress led to her stealing the package would have thrown away.

A Lakeville police sergeant spotted the horde of packages during a routine patrol around 2 a.m. Sunday.

The sergeant noted that 63 items were lying “unattended” in a wooded area near Bedford Street. As he investigated further, he found “three large bags full of Amazon packages spread out several feet in the woods,” Lakeville police said in a news release.

The carrier bags were returned to the police station – they contained 80 packages in total.

Because police had no reports of the packages being stolen or misplaced, they contacted a local Amazon distribution center in Middleborough and returned them.

On Monday, an Amazon driver visited Lakeville police and said they left these packages on the side of the road around 7 p.m. Saturday “because they were stressed.”

The driver said he planned to report the incident to his supervisor. Police did not release the driver’s name.

Lakeville police said they do not expect criminal charges.

“I am proud of the manner in which our Lakeville Police officers handled and investigated this matter. At this time, we are not seeking criminal charges and view this as a human resources matter for Amazon,” said Chief Matthew Perkins.
