Strong lake effect is expected along the lakeshore

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) – Heavy lake effect snowfall is expected for portions of the lakeshore Monday, with double-digit amounts possible in places.

A Winter storm warning applies to Ottawa, Allegan and Van Buren counties until 1 a.m. Tuesday. This area could experience very heavy snowfall in some communities.

Elsewhere, Advice on winter weather effective from 7 a.m. Monday to 7 a.m. Tuesday for Muskegon and Oceana and through early Tuesday for Kalamazoo County. Although the lake effect will not be as persistent in these areas, several centimeters are still likely.

An intense round of maritime damage is expected until Monday evening, primarily affecting parts of the lakeshore near and south of Holland. It is likely that one or two dominant bands will develop, resulting in very high local totals and rapid changes in visibility. While some communities will see 6-12+ inches through Monday evening, it is important to note that a sharp decrease in snow amounts is likely due to the nature of the lake effect.

The primary band of lake effect is expected in western Ottawa, Allegan and Van Buren counties. Heavy snowfall is expected to continue along the lakeshore for parts of the day Monday and further accumulations are expected. The morning commute is likely to be affected, and possibly the evening commute as well.
