Strong winds cause trees to fall into two homes in Berkeley – NBC Bay Area

Gusty winds toppled a giant sequoia tree overnight Tuesday, crashing onto two homes in Berkeley.

Howling winds caused a giant sequoia tree to crash into a home on Eunice Street in Berkeley around 1:30 a.m

Ben Andrews of Berkeley said his wife heard the crash and woke him up to call 911.

“She said she thought I slept through the night, and she said because our bedroom is right there,” Andrews said. “She could see something shaking, shaking, shaking, and then it just fell.”

No injuries were reported, but video footage shows the tree caused extensive damage to a home at 2215 Eunice St. and damaged the roof of a neighboring building.

“The fire department came and started flashing flashlights over there and I saw it was the whole tree. It was just crazy because we have two other big trees right next to it and it could have been our house,” Andrews said.

According to the Berkeley fire, the tree also partially landed on another home and caused minor damage to the roof. They added that the gusty winds also kept them busy overnight as several trees fell and debris spread throughout the city.

The strong gust was also responsible for causing a tree branch to fall on a truck and knocking over a restaurant’s heaters at an outdoor dining area on Shattuck Avenue.
