Superman trailer shows injured, bloody version in James Gunn film

Superman is at his lowest point when audiences first see him in the trailer for his new film. Bloody and injured, he ends up in a frozen landscape. His breathing is labored, as if he has fluid in his lungs or perhaps broken ribs.

Then hope appears – in the form of his loyal friend Krypto. “Take me home,” Superman says to his canine friend later in the trailer (below).

It’s one of only two spoken lines in the play – the other is a little boy with his eyes closed and a makeshift flag muttering “Superman, Superman” in desperate hope – but it’s a line that speaks to a hopeful writer and director James Gunn points out wanted to penetrate his new film.

Created in 1939, Superman embodied his motto “Truth, Justice and the American Way” for decades, with the character serving as a symbol of the good things America could represent to the world. This idea has become more complicated in recent years, leading to DC officially abandoning the motto and opting for “Truth, Justice and a Better Tomorrow” in 2021.

During a press trailer launch event on Monday at the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank, Gunn was asked how he would incorporate the decency that Superman can represent to America and the rest of the world into the film

“I think that’s what ‘Take Me Home’ is about,” Gunn said. “In the beginning we have a kind of battered vision of Superman, and I think that’s our country. I believe in the goodness of people, and I believe that most people in this country, despite their ideological beliefs or their politics, do their best to get by and try to be good people regardless of how it is “No matter what that other side may be,” Gunn continued.

There is a lot of driving Supermanwhich will be released on July 11th as the first solo film for the character since 2013 Man of Steel. It’s the cornerstone property of DC Studios co-heads Gunn and Peter Safran, who have planned an entire universe of TV series and films after Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav tasked them with remaking DC to invent. As such, the team is already doing everything they can to create tension, including the early press shoot, which also included stars David Corenswet (Superman), Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane) and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.

Corenswet who appeared on Ryan Murphy shows like Hollywood And The politicianHe admitted that he sometimes didn’t feel like Superman on set, but watching how his castmates reacted to him told him everything he needed to know.

“It’s like when you get a nice haircut and you forget about it, but then you’re walking around and everyone’s like, ‘Wow, you look great for once!'” he said with a laugh. “I saw how other people see Superman.”

Brosnahan experienced this first hand. After spending part of the shoot interacting with Corenswet without a suit, she met him in costume for the first time. Addressing the actor on the screening room stage Monday, Brosnahan said, “I just remember walking through a field and following you in the suit. I ran up to you and said, ‘You’re fucking Superman!’ Crazy.”

A hero is only as interesting as his villain, and Hoult said Gunn’s script introduced Lex Luthor, who he believes audiences could relate to.

“Even though you may not agree with his process, there is an element where you can understand, on some levels, where he is coming from and why what he pushes as his ideology is perhaps perhaps better for humanity,” said Hoult.

The trailer also gave glimpses of the world’s other superheroes, including Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner/Green Lantern (stupid haircut and all), Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl, and Edi Gathegi’s Mr. Terrific.

Gunn is known for bringing beloved animals to the screen, such as Rocket Raccoon, who was the central character last year Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

With Krypto, he may have done it again, with a version that subverts the decades-long version seen in the comics and other media as a clean-cut dog with his chest out. This looks more like a rescue than anything else. Of the scene-stealer in the trailer, the dog, Gunn says: “He’s not nearly the best dog. There’s a lot more to crypto than what you see in this trailer.”

Regarding the film’s themes, Gunn said, “It’s a film about kindness.”
