Suppressive defense lifts Seahawks past Jets in thriller

Defensive lineman Leonard Williams capped his monster game with two sacks on the final drive of the game to shut down Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets offense and lead the Seattle Seahawks to a thrilling 26-21 victory on Sunday at MetLife Stadium.

The Seahawks’ nightmarish special teams performance almost gave the Jets the game, but Williams and the Seattle defense held firm for 3.5 quarters to secure the win.

After an 80-yard touchdown drive on New York’s second possession of the game, the Jets never scored more than 38 yards on any drive.

In addition to helping tie the game late, Williams scored the first touchdown of his career with a 92-yard pick-six in the second quarter. Had New York scored on that drive, the Seahawks would have faced a three-point deficit.

Two turnovers in the first half on kick returns by the Seahawks and a return touchdown allowed on the other side almost led to a 21-point swing in favor of the Jets before this play.

But as well as Seattle’s defense played, posting a shutout in the second half, the Jets hurt themselves with 10 penalties in the final two quarters. Many of them expanded the Seahawks’ offensive space or hindered their own advances.

Four of those penalties, assessed against New York, came on Seattle’s game-winning, 9-play, 71-yard touchdown drive with 5:31 to play. Running back Zach Charbonnet scored the go-ahead score with an 8-yard rush.

The Seahawks did their best to beat themselves, with New York already leading 6-0 late in the first quarter. Dee Williams knocked the ball out on a kickoff return and four plays later the Jets were in the end zone and converted a two-point conversion to make it 14-0.

Seattle responded with a 10-play, 88-yard touchdown drive that ended with a short score by Seahawks rookie tight end AJ Barner. But the offense didn’t see the field again for almost six minutes.

Jets returner Kene Nwangwu used the ensuing kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown, extending New York’s lead again to 21-7. It was the largest loss Seattle had suffered since a 31-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills in Week 8.

The nightmare didn’t stop there. Laviska Shenault Jr. missed the ensuing kickoff – the Seahawks’ second special teams turnover of the first half – and the Jets recovered at the Seattle 38-yard line.

After being put in awkward situations all day so far, Williams, who had his best game as a Seahawk in Week 12, decided he’d had enough.

Rodgers dropped right back into coverage on a 3rd-and-7 from the Seattle 9-yard line and threw it straight to Williams, who tipped the ball, secured it and ran it down the left sideline for a 92-yard touchdown ran – the first of his 153-point game career.

Despite all the mistakes, the Seahawks trailed 21-13 after a blocked extra point.

The Jets began their next drive at their 44-yard line after the Seahawks fended off even more foul kicks. But New York defeated itself on a missed fourth-down conversion by Adams that left cornerback Riq Woolen in the dust.

Seattle scored three more points before halftime and was fortunate to go into the locker room trailing 21-16.

The Seahawks’ brutally inconsistent offense missed an opportunity to take their first lead of the game early in the third quarter. After reaching New York’s 4-yard line, Seattle had eight attempts – with the help of defensive penalties – to cross the goal line and take the lead.

Instead, on 4th-and-goal from the 1-yard line, Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith spun around in the backfield as he tried to reverse a straight sprint to the left. Outside linebacker Quincy Williams sacked Smith for a 15-yard loss, giving the Jets a near-touchback.

But the defense gave the Seahawks another chance. Safety Julian Love forced a fumble on Jets running back Breece Hall at the end of an 11-yard run into Seattle territory. Rookie linebacker Tyrice Knight recovered and got the ball back into the hands of the Seahawks offense.

Fueled by a crucial 24-yard completion from Smith to wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba on 4th-and-6, Seattle scored three points on its next drive, extending New York’s lead to 21-19.

With Michael Dickson unable to punt due to “back spasms,” according to Macdonald, the Seattle offense was forced to attempt three fourth-down conversions on its game-winning drive. Three New York penalties assisted all three attempts or provided automatic first downs.

The result was a six-minute Charbonnet-capped drive that won the game after the ensuing defensive stop. Rodgers’ (21-39, 185 yards, 2 touchdowns, INT) threw a last-minute fourth-down throw into the end zone after Williams’ second sack was incomplete with just over 30 seconds left. Smith (20-31, 206 yards, 1 TD) delivered the win for Seattle.

The win – Seattle’s third in a row – helped the Seahawks (7-5) take sole possession of first place in the NFC West, while the Arizona Cardinals (6-6) also fell 23-22 to the Minnesota Vikings.

Regardless of the outcome of the San Francisco 49ers (5-6) and Los Angeles Rams (5-6) in Week 13, Seattle will be at least one game ahead of all other teams in the division.

In Seattle’s last two games, Williams has totaled 10 tackles, 4.5 sacks, six tackles for loss, six quarterback hits, one interception, one touchdown and one blocked extra point. While so many others shine on the Seahawks’ defense, Williams has stood out as a catalyst.

According to NFL Communications, Williams became the first player since 1982 to record multiple sacks, a pick-six and a blocked kick in a game.

The Seahawks have held the Niners, Cardinals and Jets to fewer than 300 yards of total offense each during their three-game winning streak. They did this only twice in their first nine games, winning both (Week 1 against Denver and Week 3 against Miami).

Seattle travels to State Farm Stadium to face the Cardinals for the second time in three weeks on Sunday, December 8th at 1:05 p.m. PT. The Seahawks defeated Arizona 16-6 in Week 12 to regain first place in the NFC West.

However, if the Seahawks lose this game, Arizona will hold the tiebreaker due to a superior record in division games.
