‘Survivor 47’ winner announced

WARNING: This article contains spoilers for the season finale of Survivor 47.

Four players entered Survivor 47 finale Wednesday night on CBS, but only one would leave Tribal Council with a $1 million winner. Rachel LaMont, Sam Phalen, Sue Smey and Teeny Chirichillo were the last of the 18-member group that didn’t have their dreams dashed and their torches snuffed out early in the season.

Rachel was the clear favorite in the finale, with three individual immunity wins and a spectacular idol performance at Tribal Council. Rachel was also recognized as a strong strategic and social actor and was considered an expert in firemaking. So the big question was: was there any chance she could lose?

In a word: no.

Rachel began the finale by winning her fourth immunity challenge, joining Kelly Wiglesworth, Jenna Morasca, Kim Spradlin and Chrissy Hofbeck as the only women to win four individual immunity challenges in one season. While Kelly and Chrissy were still losing even after dominating the competitions, Rachel’s victory seemed pretty certain at this point, with the only real question being: who would end up losing to her?

Rachel took Sue to the end, forcing Sam and Teeny to compete in a final four fire-making competition. Amazingly, Sam revealed that not only had he never practiced making fire, but he had only held a flint “maybe once” in his 25 days on the island. With Rachel tutoring Teeny and Sam struggling to ignite any spark, his chances seemed slim, and in fact he seemed doomed when the competition began.

Teeny was the first to get a flame and built his stack with coaching from Rachel, while Sam initially came away empty-handed. But finally Sam brought his flint to bear and the wind began to blow Teeny’s flames away from the rope that was bound to burn. As the judges watched with tense, twisted expressions, Sam scored an unlikely victory after coming from behind, causing a distraught teen to regret “losing to the tall, handsome jock.”

This set up the final threesome of Rachel, Sam and Sue, who finally revealed her true age of 59 – on her birthday, no less! But the main battle seemed to be between Rachel and Sam, who competed politely yet firmly against each other – often correcting each other’s résumés by bragging about their own narrative. At one point, Sam tried to blunt Rachel’s momentum by remarking, “It was immunity and an idol in fries that got her to the end of that game.”

While Sam tried to sell his opponent as a player who relied solely on one-on-one wins and luck to finish, the jury didn’t buy it. By 7-1-0, they voted overwhelmingly for Rachel to win, with Kyle Ostwald’s Sam receiving the only non-Rachel vote.

After winning twelve out of 15 seasons (including six in a row) from Seasons 26 to 40, the men’s wins were five out of seven new seasons Survivors Seasons have now been won by women, including the last three.
