Suspect arrested in shooting of Greensboro police officer Michael Horan

The suspect arrested in the death of Greensboro Police Officer Michael Horan, Tarell McMillian, was being held in the Guilford County Jail early Tuesday morning. He faces a charge of first-degree murder in this incident. McMillian, 34, has an address in Leland, North Carolina, just outside Wilmington, according to court records. According to the SBI, police were called to the Food Lion on Lawndale Drive after receiving reports of a man with a gun inside the store. Horan was first on the scene and fought with McMillian. McMillian then shot Horan and drove away. He was arrested Monday afternoon on Interstate 40 along the Duplin and Sampson county line after leading the North Carolina Highway Patrol on a multi-county chase. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations said deputies performed a PIT maneuver to stop him. McMillian was being held at the Guilford County Jail around 1 a.m. In addition to the first-degree murder charge, he is also accused of several traffic offenses during the pursuit. Action Police Chief MJ Harris thanked all the police officers who assisted in McMillian’s arrest and for the community’s support. “The circumstances that led to the shooting are currently under investigation.” Thanks to the help of several partners. “The perpetrator is in custody and there is no threat to the public,” Harris said. “We would also like to thank our community for continuing to support our officers and their families during this difficult time.” According to the Guilford County Jail website, McMillian is due in court on Thursday.
