Suspect charged in fatal burning of woman on New York subway

STORY: Police have charged a man who allegedly set a woman on fire on a train in New York City and watched her burn Sunday morning.

Sebastian Zapeta, a 33-year-old Guatemalan citizen, was arrested on a subway that same afternoon.

According to police, he had a lighter in his pocket and his clothing matched that of the suspect.

New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch provided more details at a news conference Sunday following the arrest.

“As the train pulled into the station, the suspect calmly walked towards the victim, who was sitting at the end of a subway car. The suspect, we suspect, used a lighter to set the victim’s clothing on fire, which turned into fire. Within seconds, officers were on patrol on an upper level of the station, smelled and saw smoke, and went in search of a person “The flames were extinguished by an MTA employee and a fire extinguisher. Unfortunately, it was too late and the victim was found on site.”

On Monday, Zapeta was charged with murder and arson.

Police do not believe he and the victim, who was not identified, knew each other or had any prior contact.

Zapeta entered the United States without authorization in 2018 and was deported to Guatemala a few days later.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security said in a statement it was unclear when he re-entered illegally.
