The Hoyas’ Jordan Burks makes the team’s first three-pointer, marking his second three-pointer of the season. The shot gave Georgetown its first three-point lead of the game.

There have been six lead changes so far, with the game remaining tied for around three minutes. Georgetown has 16 points.

Chris Bell fouls Thomas Sorber and makes both free throws, then Donnie Freeman scores five points in a row for the Orange. Peavy ends a 7-0 Syracuse run and brings the Hoyas back to within one point.

Before the game

Syracuse (5-4) hosts Georgetown (7-2) for its Centennial Rivalry game on Dec. 14.

These two opponents met as conference and non-conference rivals, with games dating back to 1930. The two programs have had a strained relationship on the court since 1980, including showdowns between Syracuse and Georgetown nearly 30 times in the 1980s.

These two teams have been battling each other since their conference rivalry in the Big East and it has been a regularly scheduled game for Syracuse ever since. Chris Bell is the only player to previously experience the Orange vs. Hoyas rivalry for this Syracuse squad.

The Orange defeated Albany 102-85 on Tuesday after losing four of their last five games. Head coach Adrian Autry changed his starting lineup against the Great Danes, bringing in Elijah Moore for Donnie Freeman. Freeman was a game-winning decision against Albany, scoring a team-high 24 points. Jaquan Carlos recorded his first double-double of the season in Tuesday’s matchup and tallied 12 assists – his highest assist total since breaking the CAA single-game record with Hofstra.

Georgetown’s five-game winning streak ended on December 6 after the Hoyas lost to West Virginia 73-60 in Morgantown, West Virginia. Jayden Epps, Thomas Sorber and Malik Mack combined for 40 points in the loss. Sorber is Georgetown’s leading scorer through the first month of the season, averaging 15.4 points per game.

Georgetown scored just eight substitute points against the Mountaineers – the second time in as many games that the Hoyas scored no more than 10 substitute points.

Both teams have one thing in common: they have difficulty shooting from distance. Both Syracuse and Georgetown are shooting less than 30% from distance while their opponents have made at least 69 three-pointers this year.

Freeman’s perfect 4-for-4 against Albany boosted the Oranges’ percentage, while Georgetown’s Mack is the Hoyas’ best percentage at just under 40%. Still, neither team has played a consistent long-distance game. If even one player shoots well, it can have an impact on this rivalry game.
