“SZA Teases ‘Lana’ Album With Ben Stiller Video”

“SZA Teases ‘Lana’ Album With Ben Stiller Video”

SZA announced on social media Monday that her long-delayed album “Lana” — a deluxe edition of her Grammy-winning second album “SOS” — will be released on Friday. In the post, actor Ben Stiller passionately sings what is believed to be his new single “Drive” while out and about on a rainy night.

While SZA’s upcoming stadium tour with Kendrick Lamar represents a prime opportunity to release new material — she’s been touring behind “SOS” since its release two years ago — fans can be forgiven for being skeptical, as there have been plenty of false positives. However, it seems that “Lana” will become a reality this time.

The latest round of teasers began a week ago, on the two-year anniversary of “SOS,” with a short video trailer that included a snippet of one of the album’s tracks. The video shows SZA in a natural setting, pulling down her baggy camouflage pants to pee by a stream. She looks directly into the camera before pulling a tissue out of her pocket to wipe herself as the words “Lana” appear on the screen. Her lyrics go: “You know we got a real story/That’s why I can’t choose/You know that dick was good to me/You make it hard for me to choose.”

While SZA has talked about a deluxe edition of “SOS” since the album’s release, she explained the album and its contents diversity in August last year: “(‘Lana’) consists of outtakes (from ‘SOS’) and also new stuff – I added a few songs. It’s like a whole new project. It’s called “Lana” – my name, but it’s the first tattoo I ever got when I was 13. It was $10 a letter and I only had 40, so that became my nickname for no reason. “Lana” is actually just the B-side of SOS.”

A month later, on September 8, she performed a free concert at the Brooklyn Navy Yard where she performed three songs from “Lana” and said: “The deluxe album is a completely different album, it’s seven to ten songs and This will be out this fall.” Fans dubbed the songs “Boy From South Detroit,” “DTM” and “Saturn,” which was released as a standalone single back in February, causing another wave of false alarms about the Release of the album triggered.

But just a few weeks later, SZA was frustrated with fans leaking songs and posted that she was “rebooting Lana from scratch” because “y’all leaked all three songs from the deluxe version.” She continued: “At this point you can keep the disposables and leaks. I’m going to start “Lana” from the beginning. Don’t ask me about it again,” adding a few minutes later, “I’ll summarize the leaks you already have and you can have these.” Seems like a fair deal. ENJOY.” That tweet was deleted shortly afterwards. In a subsequent series of tweets, she said that the deluxe edition of SOS will now contain “the leaks and outtakes” and that “Lana” will be its own album. “Lana deserves more time and music no one has ever heard before,” she wrote, however, she seems to have returned to her previous plan.

Will the long-delayed album finally arrive on Friday? As the ever-changing saga of “Lana” shows, only time will tell.
