Tabla maestro Zakir Hussain has been admitted to a US hospital due to heart problems

NEW DELHI: Renowned tabla maestro Zakir Hussain is currently being treated in the intensive care unit of a hospital San Francisco Hospital his friend and flautist Rakesh Chaurasia on Sunday due to heart problems
According to his manager Nirmala Bachani, the 73-year-old musician, who lives in the US, was suffering from blood pressure complications.
“He has been admitted to a hospital in San Francisco for the last two weeks for heart problems,” Bachani said.
“He is not doing well and is currently being taken to intensive care. We are all worried about the situation,” Chaurasia informed PTI.
The respected musician, the firstborn of legendary tabla player Allah Rakha, has carried on his father’s legacy and achieved recognition both domestically and internationally. His successes include five Grammy Awards, three of which he received at the 66th Grammy Awards this year.
Over the course of his professional career spanning six decades, he has collaborated with numerous renowned international and Indian artists. His groundbreaking collaboration with English guitarist John McLaughlin, violinist L Shankar and percussionist TH “Vikku” Vinayakram in 1973 created an unprecedented blend Indian classical music and jazz elements.
The celebrated drummer is one of India’s most important classical musicians and was awarded the Padma Shri in 1988, the Padma Bhushan in 2002 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2023.
