Telangana is rocked by rare earthquake and minor tremors in neighboring states

A 5.3 magnitude earthquake struck Telangana’s Mulugu district at 7.27 am on Wednesday morning, triggering widespread panic among residents.

The National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported tremors across the state, including Hyderabad and parts of Andhra Pradesh.

Despite the intensity, there were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage.

Authorities are assessing the situation and advising residents to remain vigilant during the aftershocks and avoid unsafe or crowded buildings.

The NCS detailed the quake’s parameters on , Depth: 40 km, Location.” : Mulugu, Telangana.”

This earthquake is considered rare even in Telangana as it falls in Seismic Zone II, where there is typically low seismic activity.

The impact of the quake extended to Maharashtra, where tremors occurred in Nagpur, Gadchiroli and Chandrapur districts.

Minor tremors also occurred in Chandrapur, parts of the city, Ballarpur and tehsils bordering Telangana.

Telangana’s rare seismic activity contrasts with the overall vulnerability of India’s landmass, where 59 percent of the area is vulnerable to earthquakes of varying intensity.

While Zone V has the highest seismicity, Zone II has the lowest.
