Ten dead and dozens injured after driver plows car into crowd on Bourbon Street

Authorities say at least 10 people have died and dozens have been injured after a driver plowed a car into a crowd of New Year’s revelers on Bourbon Street in New Orleans.

The driver reportedly exited the vehicle and fired a gun after hitting the crowd. A large police presence and emergency services were reported at the scene. About 30 people were transported to five hospitals across the city after suffering injuries from the attack.

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell declared the incident a “terrorist attack” in a briefing Wednesday morning, but FBI agents appeared to contradict her soon after, saying that had not been confirmed.

According to police, two officers were injured in the attack, but their condition remains stable. The suspect’s status remains unclear.

Before Wednesday morning’s attack, the New Orleans Police Department said it would provide security throughout the city on New Year’s Eve, bringing an additional 300 additional officers from other parts of the state.

Police also indicated they were tightening security for the Sugar Bowl, scheduled to take place later Wednesday.

“Residents and visitors can expect a heavy presence of marked and unmarked police vehicles as well as officers on foot, bicycle and horseback as part of the department’s mounted patrol,” NOPD Superintendent Anne E. Kirkpatrick said Tuesday. “This increased visibility will increase public safety, bring crowd control and enable rapid response to any incidents.”
