Tenerife panics as ‘maximum alert’ warning issued, putting locals and tourists at risk | world | News

Locals and tourists have been given an urgent warning as Tenerife is experiencing dangerous storms.

Schools were closed today and people were told not to travel as fierce 100km/h winds from Storm Dorothea hit the popular holiday destination. Warnings have also been issued for tomorrow.

The president of the Cabildo de Tenerife for the Canary Islands Coalition, Rosa Davila, said that people should not travel and that schools should remain closed on Monday.

She posted on

“We remind you that we are on high alert due to the wind and that we must take extreme precautions and avoid unnecessary travel.”

Online footage showed a portable toilet colliding with two police vehicles and part of a wall at a business premises in Adeje collapsing.

Spain’s state weather agency, AEMET, has issued a red warning for the island of El Hierro.

It said: “Wind gusts of more than 130km/h were observed and could continue in the coming hours.”

“Caution! The danger is extreme! Hurricane gusts can also be registered on the other western islands: considerable danger.”

112 Canarias says it has recorded 300 incidents since the bad weather began in the western islands.

The Ministry of Tourism and Employment of the Government of the Canary Islands announced this morning that, due to weather conditions, the General Directorate of Public Services will allow employees of the General Administration of the Autonomous Community of Tenerife, La Palma, El Hierro and La Gomera to work remotely on Monday .

A translated instruction said: “The Government of the Canary Islands, through the General Directorate of Emergencies, has maintained the declaration of the maximum wind warning based on the forecasts of the State Meteorological Agency for December 16, 2024.”

“This highest alert level affects the islands of El Hierro, La Gomera and part of the island of Tenerife, with the island of La Palma and the rest of Tenerife on alert and the remaining islands on pre-alert.”

The dangerous weather will continue tomorrow. The vice-president of the Tenerife Island Council, Lope Afonso, explained that AEMET had maintained an orange warning for strong wind gusts in the north of Tenerife and a yellow warning for the south for Tuesday.

He added: “Avoid unnecessary movement and secure falling objects.”
