Tennessee beat MTSU 82-64 and remains undefeated

Tennessee found itself in unfamiliar territory Monday night, trailing MTSU by six at halftime: Final score Tennessee 82 MTSU 64

Whatever message was sent at halftime, it was received as Tennessee outscored the Blue Raiders by 24 points in the second half, allowing them just one field goal in their final 11 attempts.

After shooting 50% from the field in the first half, MTSU shot just 29.6% in the second half.

Offensive, Chaz Lanier led the way with 23 points, including 5 of 10 from beyond the 3-point line. Zakai Zeigler had 17 points and 15 assists in 38 minutes of play. After a goalless first half Jordan Gainey was 10 for 4 of 6 from the field, including 2 of 2 from 3pt Land.

MTSU (9-4) got 23 from Camryn Westonwho had 17 points in the first half and Kamari lands scored 10 points.

The win moves Tennessee to 12-0, but depth concerns continue to grow. Freshman Bishop Boswell was unable to play due to shoulder soreness. And already on Monday it was announced that second-year student Cam Carr has decided to leave the team and will enter the transfer portal in April.

Tennessee hosts Norfolk State again next Tuesday, with a 3:00 p.m. Eastern time start on SEC Network+ on New Year’s Eve.

The Vols are in the middle of a four-game homestand that began last week with an 84-36 win over UT Martin. SEC play begins Jan. 4 at home against Arkansas before the Vols go back on the road Jan. 7 at No. 6 Florida and Jan. 11 at Texas.

The remainder of the January schedule includes dates with Georgia, Vanderbilt, Mississippi State, Auburn and Kentucky.
