Terry Bradshaw says the Steelers shouldn’t have traded Kenny Pickett

Terry Bradshaw once jumped on the Justin Fields bandwagon. He then admitted that switching from Mike Tomlin to Russell Wilson was the right decision. Now Bradshaw believes the team was stupid for trading Kenny Pickett and looking for new quarterbacks in the first place. During his weekly appearance on Fox NFL’s pre-game show on Sunday, Bradshaw made the comments following the news that Pickett would face the Dallas Cowboys today as his new team, the Philadelphia Eagles, look to win the division .

“They never should have gotten rid of Pickett,” Bradshaw said.

He was then debriefed and asked if he had the same opinion three weeks ago, before the Pittsburgh Steelers’ losing streak began.

“Yeah. I’m thinking about it,” he said as the jury burst into laughter.

Pittsburgh intentionally had no intention of trading Pickett, even though it was clear he was falling out of favor as a franchise quarterback. The Steelers signed Russell Wilson in March and planned to have him and Pickett compete for the No. 1 spot during training camp. Pickett understandably sensed that Wilson was the clear favorite and demanded a trade. Pittsburgh honored the obligation and sent him to Philadelphia in a pick swap and two seventh-round selections.

Pickett served as Jalen Hurts’ backup for most of the season and took over the starting role. Hurts suffered a concussion early in the Week 16 game against the Washington Commanders, forcing Pickett into the lineup. His play was mixed and some fans called for him to be benched. NFL rules dictate that the third emergency quarterback can only play in the event of an injury, although Pickett suffered a rib injury midway through the game.

Still, Pickett finished things off by going 14 of 24 for 143 yards with a touchdown, an interception and three sacks. A dropped pass from WR Devonta Smith proved costly and Washington won 36-33 in the final seconds of the game.

According to Jay Glazer of Fox Sports, Pickett will wear extra padding on his injured ribs against the Dallas Cowboys. A win today would give the Eagles the division. Once Hurts is cleared from the concussion protocol, Pickett will return to the bench. But this is an important step for him and the team and Pickett’s best chance to contribute this season.

As of this writing, the Eagles and Cowboys are tied at 7. Pickett has not yet entered the field thanks to a Philadelphia pick-six on Dallas’ first possession.
