Somehow, Tank Dell held the ball.

On Saturday, the Houston Texans receiver threw a pass into the end zone in a 27-19 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. But as he grabbed it, teammate Jared Wayne also dived for the deep ball. Wayne collided with Dell’s left leg and it was immediately clear that Dell had suffered a serious leg injury.

Dell’s teammates immediately became worried about him. Wayne and Texas quarterback CJ Stroud both appeared to be in tears as the car came out for Dell. Stroud had to be comforted by several teammates immediately after the injury.

Hours after the game, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Dell had suffered a dislocated kneecap and that surgery was possible while doctors assessed the damage.

Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans had previously said after the game that Dell suffered a “significant knee injury” and would remain in Kansas City overnight for further evaluation.

Stroud, who also spoke after the game, said all he could do was pray.

A year ago, Dell’s rookie season was cut short when he suffered a broken fibula. Dell was placed on a stretcher and placed on the cart as several teammates gathered around him. The NBC broadcast said Dell’s leg was placed in a vacuum splint to stabilize it and he was taken straight to a hospital.

If Dell’s injury is as bad as it looked, it’s a huge blow to the Texans. The Texans have already lost Stefon Diggs to a season-ending knee injury. Dell had 569 yards and two touchdowns this season. He had a big day Saturday against the Kansas City Chiefs with 98 yards and a touchdown.

Given the severity of the injury and the importance he obviously means to his teammates, Dell was hardly concerned. For the second year in a row, Dell’s season appears to have ended prematurely due to a serious injury.
