Texas Longhorns hold off Aggies, punch ticket to SEC Championship

COLLEGE STATION – The Texas Longhorns are headed to Atlanta for the SEC Championship.

After a hard-fought battle at Kyle Field, Texas won the first SEC edition of the Lone Star Showdown, defeating the Texas A&M Aggies 17-7 in College Station.

But it wasn’t easy.

Texas was slow out of the gates offensively and couldn’t get anything out of its first drive of the game.

However, after a Michael Taaffe interception in Texas A&M territory, the Longhorns found life and marched down the field for a scoring drive capped by an Arch Manning touchdown run.

And after forcing a quick punt from the Aggies, the Horns were back on the field, with quarterback Quinn Ewers hitting running back Jaydon Blue in the corner of the end zone, giving Texas a two-point lead in the first half.

The Horns forced another three-pointer on the next possession and pulled away from the Aggies’ offense, putting Texas A&M in trouble early. They then took advantage again, scoring a field goal to take a three-point lead before halftime.

However, things got a little dicey for Texas in the second half.

The Horns had two chances to take the lead, but two turnovers wiped out both possessions, one of which resulted in a pick-six by the Aggies.

But that was the end of the road for the Aggies, who were unable to mount any offensive attack for the rest of the game, thanks in large part to a sack fumble by defensive end Trey Moore that led to a Longhorns recovery.

On offense, the Longhorns relied on the running game, gaining 240 yards on 50 carries and 458 total yards on offense. The attack was led by Quentrevion Wisner, who finished the game with 33 carries for 186 yards.

Quinn Ewers had a quiet but efficient night, aside from the two turnovers, completing 17 of 28 passes for 218 yards and a score.

Defensively, the Horns were dominant, holding the Aggies to 246 total yards of offense, including just 146 yards through the air from Marcel Reed.

With the win, the Longhorns now have Kyle Field bragging rights once again as they head to Atlanta for their first trip to the SEC Championship.
