Texas Longhorns win home game against Clemson

The College Football Playoff Committee announced Sunday that Texas will be the No. 5 seed in its 12-team playoffs.

Texas (11-2) is a No. 5 seed and hosts Clemson (10-3) for a first-round playoff game. The Longhorns and Tigers will meet at Royal-Memorial Stadium on December 21 at 3 p.m. in a game that will be televised on TNT.

The winner of the Texas-Clemson game will face Arizona State (11-2) in the CFP quarterfinals. This quarterfinal game will take place in the Peach Bowl in Atlanta.

Texas is coming off an overtime loss to Georgia in the SEC championship game on Saturday. Had Texas beaten Georgia, the Longhorns would have received a first-round bye in this year’s expanded playoffs. Georgia instead received the No. 2 seed and the extra time off awarded to the SEC champion.

This is UT’s second appearance in a playoff that has decided the college football champions since 2014. Last year, Texas qualified for a four-team playoff but was eliminated in the semifinals by Washington.

How does the CFP schedule work?

The CFP’s top-ranked conference champions receive a bye in the first round and are seeded one through four. If the Group of Five champion is not among the top 12 teams in the final vote, they will finish in 12th place.

Once these are determined, the seven overall teams will form seeds 5-12; No. 5 hosts No. 12, No. 6 hosts No. 11, No. 7 hosts No. 10 and No. 8 hosts No. 9. These teams play in the first round of the CFP with higher-seeded teams, which will begin on April 20 . and Dec. 21 on their home field (or a field of their choice).

The winners of the first round will play on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day against teams that had a bye. These games are Fiesta Bowl, Peach Bowl, Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl.

There will be no “reseeding” in the CFP.

The four winners will play in the Orange Bowl on January 9th and the Cotton Bowl on January 10th. The season ends on Monday, January 20th in Atlanta with the national championship.
