Texas safety Azeez Al-Shaair apologizes for hitting Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence

Houston Texans safety Azeez Al-Shaair apologized Monday for his hit on Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

During the team’s meeting on Sunday, Al-Shair pounced on a sliding Lawrence in the second quarter and hit the defenseless quarterback in the head with his forearm. Lawrence showed a defensive reaction after the collision and was ruled out of the game due to a concussion.

“To Trevor, I sincerely apologize for what ultimately happened,” Al-Shair wrote on X. “Before the game we spoke and I told you how great it was to see you back on the field and I wished you all the best. “I never want to see a player get hurt because I gave him a hit, especially if it was deemed “late” or “unnecessary.”

He then added: “To the rest of the people I called every single name in the book, from reporters ready for a story to find their villain to racist and Islamophobic fans and people, you “Neither my heart nor my character know, which I don’t have to prove to any of you.”

In the post, Al-Shair explains why he took the hit and says he plays every game as hard as he can without any intention of getting hurt.

“I actually didn’t see him slip until it was too late. And everything happens in the blink of an eye,” the security service wrote.

The hit angered Lawrence’s teammates, as a scuffle broke out on the field immediately after the game. In his apology, Al-Shair said he understood why the Jaguars defended their quarterback the way they did.

Al-Shair was an undrafted free agent in his sixth season in the NFL and has already been disciplined several times this season for on-field incidents. He was fined more than $11,000 for both a late hit on Tennessee Titans running back Tony Pollard in a game on November 24th and a hit he made on September 15th Chicago Bears running back Roschon Johnson.

Al-Shair is expected to be suspended for his hit on Lawrence, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Monday.

On Monday, Jacksonville coach Doug Pederson said Lawrence’s status for the rest of the season is uncertain.

“Thank you to everyone who looked after me/prayed for me,” Lawrence wrote to X on Sunday. “I’m home and feeling better. Means a lot to me, thank you everyone.”
