Texas Tech football star Tahj Brooks is skipping the Liberty Bowl against Arkansas

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Running back Tahj Brooks and cornerback Bralyn Lux, both seniors, are not expected to play in the Texas Tech football season finale in the Liberty Bowl on Friday night.

Tech Athletics made the announcement shortly before Tech (8-4) meets Arkansas (6-6) at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium at 6 p.m. Tech said Brooks, Lux and wide receiver Josh Kelly all made personal decisions not to play. It was already known that Kelly withdrew from the game to begin training for the NFL draft process.

Defensive end Sam Carrell (foot), defensive tackle Quincy Ledet (knee), linebacker Bryce Ramirez (lower leg), defensive back Devynn Cromwell (shoulder) and quarterback Behren Morton (shoulder surgery) are also expected to miss the game due to injuries. .

Brooks was with the team throughout December and Tech coach Joey McGuire said he attended bowl practices in both Lubbock and Memphis. McGuire was cautious about Brooks’ availability in a press conference the day before the game, saying it was “50-50” whether he would play.

The Red Raiders’ top backups are J’Koby Williams and Cameron Dickey, true freshmen who have both played in almost every game. During the regular season, they totaled 270 yards and two touchdowns.

Brooks finished his career with 4,557 rushing yards, which is officially the school record. He surpassed the mark of 4,219 yards set by Byron Hanspard from 1994 to 1996. Hanspard’s career numbers do not include the 360 yards rushing he accumulated in bowl games, including his Copper Bowl record of 260 yards against Air Force, because the NCAA did not consider statistics from postseason games prior to 2002.
