ATLANTA – The quarterfinals of the College Football Playoff continue today with the No. 5 Texas Longhorns taking on the No. 1 seed in the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl – Wednesday, Jan. 1 – at Mercedez-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia .4 of the Arizona State Sun Devils. Texas is led by junior quarterback Quinn Ewers, who rushed for 2,867 yards with 26 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He has scored multiple passing touchdowns in eight games this season.

In both losses, Ewers was downed with 11 sacks and threw three interceptions. A clean game will be crucial for the gunslinger.

Star offensive lineman Cameron Williams is a play-by-play decision for the Longhorns that hurts Ewers’ chances of escaping pressure.

Junior receiver Isaiah Bond returns from an ankle injury in the SEC championship game. He has 33 receptions for 532 yards and five touchdowns, averaging 16.1 yards per reception.

Senior tight end Gunnar Helm could be in for a big day. He has 55 receptions for 688 yards and six touchdowns, averaging 12.5 yards per reception. Helm had six receptions for 77 yards and a touchdown against Clemson.

Junior receiver Matthew Golden has 49 receptions for 787 yards and eight touchdowns, averaging 16.1 yards per reception.

The Longhorns’ rushing attack continued to shine in the second half of the season, throwing the Tigers for 292 yards on the ground.

Explosive sophomore back Quintrevion Wisner had 110 yards with three touchdowns. He has a total of 191 carries for 973 yards and five touchdowns this season.

Junior running back Jaydon Blue rushed for 146 yards and two scores in the first-round game. He recorded 126 carries for 710 yards and eight touchdowns.

Texas has struggled in the redzone recently, scoring just 51.6% in the last eight games. They scored 3 of 5 points in those situations against Clemson.

The defense is allowing 13.3 points per game, which ranks second nationally.

The Longhorns defense allowed 300 yards against Clemson for the first time this season. The Tigers became just the third team to reach the 200-yard mark through the air. The unit has allowed just seven passing touchdowns all season, including three in the opening playoff game.

Texas’ defense is a poor mix of speed and power. Senior defensive back Jahdae Barron, the Thorpe Award winner, recorded 35 solo tackles with five interceptions and 11 pass deflections. He can play many defensive positions and the Longhorns have used him in a variety of ways this season.

The Sun Devils (11-2) enter their first College Football Playoff game on a six-game winning streak and with all the house money as the quarterfinals’ biggest underdogs. They defeated Iowa State 45-19 in the Big 12 title game.

Their only losses (Texas Tech, Cincinnati) were each by 10 points or less.

The Sun Devils are averaging 33.1 points per game, which is 31st in the FBS. They are averaging 37.2 points per game during their six-game winning streak.

Arizona State’s success is based on powerful senior running back Cam Skattebo. He has caught 263 carries for 1,568 yards and 19 touchdowns, an average of six yards per carry. He also has 506 receiving yards and three touchdowns through the air.

Skattebo has rushed for 140 or more yards in seven games this season, including three times against ranked teams. He defeated the Cyclones in the Big 12 Championship with 170 rushing yards and two scores.

If Texas can slow the desert wrecking ball, Arizona State will have to conjure up a gutsy performance elsewhere.

The Sun Devils have a confident freshman under center. Sam Leavitt passed for 2,663 yards with 24 touchdowns and five interceptions. His QBR of 81.6 is the eighth highest in the country and he has completed 63% of his attempts while racking up 383 yards and five touchdowns on the ground.

Leavitt has thrown three or more passing touchdowns in six games this season, including in the Big 12 Championship game against Iowa State.

He captured the nation’s attention when he promised to show he was the best quarterback on the field.

Senior receiver Xavier Guillory is one to keep an eye on. He has 19 receptions for 320 yards and five touchdowns, averaging 16.8 yards per reception.

Arizona State’s defense is stout, allowing 21.3 points per game, which ranks 21st nationally.

Rattling Ewers could play an important role in helping Arizona State keep that goal close. Enter Sun Devils junior defenseman Xavion Alford. The first-time All-Big 12 selection has 37 solo tackles, four pass deflections and two interceptions.

Arizona State will have its hands full against the run, but they have strengthened their run defense this season. The Sun Devils have allowed 114 rushing yards per game over the last three contests.

Senior linebacker Caleb McCullough has 38 solo tackles with two interceptions. Junior defensive lineman Clayton Smith has 14 solo tackles with four sacks and a forced fumble.

The winner advances to the Cotton Bowl to play either No. 8 Ohio State or No. 1 Oregon on January 10 at 7:30 p.m. Eastern Time.
