Thanksgiving Weather 2024: Storm Threatens NYC Parade, Snow Possible l Forecast

Two separate storm systems with heavy rain are expected to impact New York City’s busy Thanksgiving holiday traffic, and the second could even bring some snow to parts of the Tri-State area.

“The rain is likely to continue until tomorrow morning, but there will be a short round of showers on Tuesday morning.” FOX 5 NYs said Mike Woods.

Heavy rain is expected in the Big Apple on Tuesday, mostly before 4 p.m. The chance of precipitation is 90%, according to the National Weather Service.

Significant travel disruptions are not expected from this low-impact storm as the FOX Forecast Center expects winter weather to be limited near the Canadian border and in the Great Lakes region.

MMeanwhile, a last-minute storm on Thanksgiving Day is expected to cause travel problems that will likely last through Black Friday and the start of the weekend.

A low pressure system is expected to move into the Northeast on Thanksgiving. The worst weather is expected to occur north of the system, where the air will be cold enough to allow snow to break out. The FOX Forecast Center expects snow to be concentrated in areas of the interior northeast.

Some decent amounts of snow are possible for parts of New York State, and significant travel disruptions could occur on the Interstate 81 and 90 corridors on Thanksgiving. The snow there could last until Black Friday before finally leaving the region.

Snow on Thanksgiving?

Closer to the center of the storm, however, heavy rain is expected to hit millions of travelers in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. The rain is also accompanied by strong winds.

“Thanksgiving looks like it’s going to be pretty chilly and wet,” Woods said in a post on X, officially Twitter.

According to the National Weather Service, there is a 70% chance of precipitation, but it should mostly rain.

“There’s a mix of rain, snow and ice, but more to the north and west,” Woods said.

“This looks like a situation where it could rain all Thanksgiving, it’s basically just raining,” Woods said.

The FOX Forecast Center expects the coldest air of the season to enter the United States in the days after Thanksgiving and early December.

Below average temperatures are possible across much of the country.
