It’s going to be cold for Turkey Day

A storm is forecast to bring wet and wintry weather across the country from California to Maine throughout the week, potentially impacting travel for the millions of people planning to travel in the days surrounding Thanksgiving. And it’s about to get cold – very cold. Frighteningly cold air coming straight from the Arctic will make an unwelcome appearance across nearly the entire eastern half of the country this weekend and early next week The cold may last for a while.

Trump’s tariffs could drive up the prices of these goods

People fear that China, Mexico, Canada or other countries will not directly bear the cost of the aggressive tariffs that Donald Trump wants to impose on imported goods.

What happened: The president-elect promised Monday that when he takes office in January he will sign an executive order imposing a 25% tariff – essentially a tax or fee – on all imported goods from Mexico and Canada, as well as a 10% tariff on China.

Americans could expect to pay more. Importers pay the additional costs of purchasing these international goods and then pass the burden on to consumers, usually in the form of increased prices.
Your new roof. Your new phone. The new book. The U.S. also imports billions worth of wood and paper from its northern neighbor, which if slapped with a 25% tariff could have far-reaching effects on products like printed books and industries like housing. Electronics are part of the majority of goods shipped from China to the United States each year. Other popular imports made in China include textiles, furniture and toys.
How do tariffs work? The idea behind the tariffs is to drive up prices for imported goods and encourage U.S. companies and consumers to choose U.S.-made products.

Israel agrees to a ceasefire with Hezbollah

Guns fell silent on the Israel-Lebanon border on Wednesday following a ceasefire agreement between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah. The fighting is to be halted for 60 days to give Israel time to gradually withdraw its troops from southern Lebanon while Hezbollah moves its troops further from the Israeli border. The agreement is not expected to have a significant impact on the war in Gaza that began 14 months ago. Read more

The Key to Weight Loss: Expanded Access to Medication?

On Tuesday, the Biden administration announced plans to provide coverage for expensive obesity drugs, including Wegovy and Zepbound, to Americans enrolled in Medicare and Medicaid. The proposed rule would make an estimated 4 million Medicaid recipients and 3.4 million Americans on Medicare eligible for the drug, which can be sold without insurance for more than $1,000 a month. However, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who was appointed by President-elect Donald Trump to head the Department of Health and Human Services, wasn’t as enthusiastic about weight-loss drugs. Instead, he wants Americans to focus on their diet.
