The 12 major football championship tiebreakers for ASU

Oddly, the Big 12 held back from clarifying tiebreaker scenarios to members of the media who sought assistance ahead of Arizona State’s meeting with BYU on Saturday. The reason?

It was crazy complicated back then, and we know it because after a week of games it’s still crazy complex. The bottom line: ASU’s path to the Big 12 Championship Game is pretty clear: They beat the Arizona Wildcats in Tucson on Saturday.

According to FanDuel Sportsbook, the Sun Devils are currently the favorite to win the title game at +135 odds as of Monday, largely because they have the best chance of ever making it.

But the Sun Devils are one of them nine Teams still fighting to win the game and win the conference.

ASU sits atop the league with a conference record of 6-2. BYU, Iowa State and Colorado all have the same record, while five other teams are just one game behind at 5-3. That group includes Kansas State, Baylor, TCU, Texas Tech and West Virginia.

Each of these 5-3 teams must win to have a chance at a title game, and at least three of the teams entering the regular season finale at 6-2 must suffer a loss.

The Big 12 sent out a press release on Sunday with official tiebreakers outlining a very, very specific scenario in which Arizona State could beat the Wildcats and still miss the title game at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

If Houston beats BYU, Texas Tech beats West Virginia, Baylor drops Kansas and Cincinnati beats TCU, then the Sun Devils will be left out for Colorado against Iowa State – if CU and ISU also win.

How unlikely is that given the betting odds? According to FanDuel Sportsbook, adding an ASU win to seven-game odds would give odds of +7739.
