San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan will work with an offensive coordinator for the first time since Mike McDaniel took over in 2021. Shanahan has announced that the team is promoting offensive passing game specialist Klay Kubiak to offensive coordinator.

Shanahan assigned Kubiak to officiate the game during the 49ers’ season finale against the Arizona Cardinals, a game the team lost 47-24. However, the 49ers were missing quarterback Brock Purdy and other key players for the contest.

The head coach emphasized that he was satisfied with Kubiak’s performance in the Week 18 game.

Kubiak had previously determined the moves in two preparation games. He joined Shanahan’s staff in 2021 as a defensive quality control coach before moving to the offensive role.

Kubiak has served as an assistant quarterbacks coach since then and was promoted to offensive passing specialist last year. He is the son of former NFL head coach Gary Kubiak and the brother of Klint Kubiak, who served as the 49ers’ passing game coordinator in 2023 before becoming the New Orleans Saints’ offensive coordinator last year.
