The 49ers are promoting Klay Kubiak to offensive coordinator

The San Francisco 49ers have had no problems moving the ball offensively in 2024. Tight end George Kittle pointed out that the Niners were in the top five most weeks when it came to moving the ball.

The problems arose when it came to putting points on the scoreboard. The red zone issues were a struggle. This can be attributed to the team not running the ball well or because there is a constant threat in the red zone.

One could argue that Kittle is the weapon and should have achieved numerous targets, but we can save that discussion for another day.

During their press conference, head coach Kyle Shanahan named Klay Kubiak offensive coordinator. Shanahan will still call the plays, but Kubiak will have the title of offensive coordinator.

Kubiak will be the second offensive coordinator under Shanahan and the first since Mike McDaniel in 2021.

Shanahan, Kubiak and the organization will benefit from this title. There will be multiple interviews and potential interviews with the head coach in the future for Kubiak as the 49ers offense climbs back into the top five.

While Shanahan is still calling plays, he could pass more to Kubiak. The red zone is an option, as are a dozen other areas where Kubiak could help keep Shanahan out. It’s not the coordinator news we were expecting, but Shanahan took a step back, realized he needed either a change or help, and did so. This is a positive sign.
