The 49ers empty De’Vondre Campbell’s locker and remove his name tag

The 49ers are done with linebacker De’Vondre Campbell.

Yes, they handed out a three-game suspension after he refused to play on Thursday night. But this is an obvious (and hardly unjustified) attempt to save some money and keep him from playing for another team, which may be exactly what he wants. No matter, he won’t come back.

Via Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com, the 49ers have emptied Campbell’s locker and removed his name tag.

Nobody on the team will complain. Tight end after Thursday night’s loss to the Rams George Kittle and cornerback Charvarius Ward sounded out. More players reported today.

Defensive end Nick Bosa said via Wagoner Campbell complained in the locker room before the game. Bosa considered intervening, but “didn’t want to create more distraction.”

“I kind of saw the foreshadowing and definitely didn’t think it would lead to this,” Bosa said.

Cornerback Deommodore Lenoir added: “I just lost all respect. I am someone who achieves 110 percent in every game. If I’m hurt and the guy behind me doesn’t support me and can’t get in or doesn’t want to get in, I just feel like he’s a cancer on the team.”

The fact that Campbell has not offered his version of events either directly or through his agent in the four days since it happened is telling. If he had a good reason for refusing to play, we would know about it.

What we know now is that he will not play for the 49ers or anyone else this season – unless there is an emergency grievance aimed at overturning the suspension and forcing the 49ers to keep him or to give up on him.
