The 5-star football freshman from Alabama is entering the transfer portal

Alabama football defensive lineman Jaylen Mbakwe has submitted paperwork to enter the transfer portal, sources with knowledge of the situation told AL.com.

Mbakwe was a five-star defensive back in the 2024 recruiting class out of Clay-Chalkville High School. The 5-11, 192-pound cornerback appeared on defense in 10 of the 12 games and played 221 snaps, per Pro Football Focus.

Mbakwe recorded 12 tackles and one interception in 2024.

Not only was he a significant recruit, but he also played a crucial role in Ryan Williams’ return to Alabama. Bob Welton, Alabama’s director of player personnel, described Mbakwe as “the hidden factor.”

“A&M couldn’t say,” Welton told AL.com in September. “Auburn, he knew some people there but not like (Mbakwe). I thought Jaylen was always a quiet guy when recruiting Ryan Williams.”

Mbakwe is the latest defensive back to enter the transfer portal since it opened a week ago. He joins starting nickel defensive back DeVonta Smith and reserve cornerback Jahlil Hurley. Other notable players who have entered the transfer portal include running back Justice Haynes and receiver Kendrick Law.

The transfer portal remains open for another two weeks.
