The AFC standings could depend on Patrick Mahomes’ ankle injury

The Kansas City Chiefs won on Sunday, but quarterback Patrick Mahomes left the game in the fourth quarter with an injury. He limped off the field, did not return, and eventually limped to the locker room after the game.

Head coach Andy Reid said Mahomes’ ankle is not broken and the QB will be evaluated on a day-to-day basis. Mahomes asked to come back into the game, but the Chiefs declined and didn’t need him back on the field.

“It’s not broken, but it hurts,” Reid told reporters. “He’ll start the rehab part over time and then we’ll just have to see how he does.”

Mahomes left the locker room after the game on a cart, putting his future status even more in question.

We’ve seen Mahomes play with injuries like this before, but that was in the postseason. In that case, it could be beneficial for the Chiefs to cut him in the regular season in order to have him back at full strength for the playoffs.

The Chiefs face two close turnarounds: next Saturday against the Houston Texans and on Christmas Wednesday against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Oh yeah, those are two teams that are currently at the top of their divisions in the NFL. It doesn’t get any easier.

After that, the Chiefs will travel to Denver to face the potentially playoff-bound Broncos in Week 18.

The Bills, on the other hand, face the New England Patriots and the New York Jets twice. Both teams are already out of the playoff race and have little reason to do so other than pride.

The No. 1 seed is still in play for the Buffalo Bills. Find the full AFC rankings here.
