The Alabama comedian moves into the national spotlight with “Nate Bargatze’s Nashville Christmas.”

Comedian Nate Bargatze’s new Christmas special gave the world a big look at a comedian with roots in Alabama.

Derrick Stroup didn’t make it clear during his standup show on “Nate Bargatze’s Nashville Christmas,” which aired Thursday on CBS. But when he said, “I’m from 90 miles south of here,” the math was pretty simple.

It turns out that Stroup is from West Virginia and his family moved to Harvest, a community northwest of Huntsville, when he was 9 years old.

He visited Monrovia Middle School, a location he recently visited with a cameraman to document his tour of his old stomping grounds.

In this clip, which can be seen on Stroup’s Facebook page, Stroup says growing up in the Huntsville area made an impression on him. “I’m really proud of my heritage,” he says.

“This is such a unique area.” During the lunch break at school, he says: “Half of the children’s parents were farmers, the other half were rocket scientists.”

In Bargatze’s special, Stroup mentions that he has lived in Colorado for about a decade.

The gig caps a good year for him: Over the summer, he released a new album, “Eating Dinner Twice,” on Larry the Cable Guy’s Git-R-Done label, and according to his website, he toured with Bargatze and Bert Kreischer.

Among the themes on “Eating Dinner Twice” is his love of Waffle House, which he describes as “Southern Hibachi.”

In his “Nashville Christmas” section, he explores Southern eating habits, another favorite topic. “We don’t have low sugar, but we tell people we do,” he says. “‘We say, ‘My sugar is low, my sugar is low,’ and if you don’t bring us a piece of cake, you’re a bad person.”

“Listen, you should eat whatever you want,” he advises. “The world is burning. If you watch the news and say, “I’ll have a kale salad,” you’ll feel sick, man. There’s no better time than now to add sauce to your salad. …Do you want to live to be a hundred years old to see how this movie ends? You have problems.”

Nate Bargate’s Nashville Christmas is available to stream on Paramount+. It can also be viewed at www.cbs.com.

According to his website’s tour page, Stroup will play two New Year’s Eve sets at Levity Live in Huntsville. Tickets are $25 and are available on the venue’s website.
