The Appleton area is expected to see heavier afternoon snowfall during Thursday’s winter storm

APPLETON – Appleton is expected to see 5 to 7 inches of snow Thursday morning through Friday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service Green Bay. The heavier snowfall is expected to begin Thursday afternoon and continue into the overnight hours before snow begins to break out at 7 a.m. Friday.

In Appleton there is a 10% chance of more than 8 inches of snow falling. Around 9:45 a.m. it started snowing in the Fox Valley.

How will the snow affect commutes?

Roads will be covered in snow, impacting commutes Thursday afternoon and likely Friday morning as well.

According to National Weather Service Green Bay meteorologist Gus Kaiser, the snow is expected to remain on the ground into the next week. Kaiser advises drivers to drive slowly in these dangerous conditions and to give other people on the road enough space.

Where can I check road conditions?

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation maintains an interactive map detailing winter road conditions for major highways and highways: 511wi.gov.

The ministry announced new winter road condition categories for the map on Tuesday to help drivers understand conditions more clearly. The new conditions are: normal, marked green; partially obscured, in blue; completely covered, in pink; Travel is discouraged, in black; and no report, in gray.

The map also shows active crashes and provides insight through traffic cameras on some roadways – particularly Interstate 41 and US 10/State 441 in the Fox Cities.

What is the temperature forecast?

Temperatures will remain above 20 degrees on Thursday before falling below 10 degrees on Friday evening. Here is the weather forecast from the National Weather Service:

  • Thursday: High of 30, low of 24.

  • Friday: High of 28, low of 8.
