The “Art of the Deal” president wants to try to save TikTok

President-elect Donald Trump has described himself as a negotiator.

With the hugely popular social media platform TikTok set to be banned in the US a day before his return to the White House, the new commander in chief says he wants a chance to save it.

“President Trump alone has the deep business expertise, electoral mandate and political will to negotiate a solution to save the platform while addressing the national security concerns raised by the administration – concerns that President Trump himself has acknowledged,” said a statement. Trump filed the brief Friday evening ahead of an upcoming Supreme Court hearing next month.

Trump and his allies have long touted the president as a “dealmaker” and said he would continue to do so in his second turn in the Oval Office, including by negotiating an end to Israel’s war in Gaza and announcing tariffs against Allies Mexico and Canada are making efforts to curb immigration to the United States – a key campaign goal for the president-elect.

Trump urged the Supreme Court to stay a law that could ban TikTok, arguing that the president-elect’s negotiating skills will be able to find a solution that addresses the national security concerns of TikTok’s Beijing-based parent company, ByteDance. as well as concerns that banning the app would restrict free speech in the United States.

“President Trump’s first term was marked by a series of policy successes achieved through historic deals, and he has strong prospects for success in this latest national security and foreign policy endeavor,” the letter said, without elaborating to enter into politics.

Earlier this year, Congress passed bipartisan legislation signed by President Joe Biden that requires TikTok’s Beijing-based parent company ByteDance to sell the app. The app would be banned from stores and web hosting companies in the US if ByteDance doesn’t sell it.

TikTok has previously asked the Supreme Court to suspend enforcement of this requirement while the company continues to make its case that the law is unconstitutional. Earlier this month, the Supreme Court said it would decide whether to maintain the Jan. 19 deadline only after justices debated the merits of the law at oral arguments scheduled for Jan. 10.

Although Trump tried to ban the app during his first term as president, the president made it his campaign promise in the 2024 presidential election to “save TikTok” as he often used the app in his presidential campaign to appeal to young voters.

Trump’s lawyers said in the brief that Trump’s creation of his own social media site, Truth Social, and his use of TikTok, where he has 14.7 million followers, allow him to “understand the importance of TikTok as a unique medium for freedom of expression, including nuclear policy.” Speech.”

Trump’s failed spending bill

Although Trump touts his negotiating skills, the president-elect is already struggling with parts of his agenda — failing to hold his party together during a government debate over funding.

At the beginning of the month, Trump collapsed an initial agreement on short-term spending. He failed to win Republican support for legislation he sponsored that would keep the U.S. government open through March while raising the federal government’s debt ceiling.

The House of Representatives then passed a bipartisan bill, supported mostly by Democrats, to prevent a government shutdown.
