The Astros’ blockbuster trade pitch sends Kyle Tucker to the Yankees in a four-player swap

The Houston Astros could be looking for a subtraction addition this winter.

After eight straight playoff seasons, star third baseman Alex Bregman could leave for a major long-term deal with another team in free agency. And two other stars, pitcher Framber Valdez and outfielder Kyle Tucker, are entering the final years of their contract negotiations, raising the possibility that the Astros could try to trade them for something in return before they also leave for new contracts.

The Athletic’s Chandler Rome reported that Astros general manager Dana Brown is “open to trading one of Tucker or starter Framber Valdez,” and that it’s entirely possible Tucker gets the bigger package in return.

At just 27 years old, he is a three-time All-Star, a former Silver Slugger and Gold Glove Award winner, and was voted the Most Valuable Player Award in three different seasons. He was sidelined for a long time in 2024 due to injury, but ultimately hit .289/.408/.585 with 23 home runs.

A team that is looking for offensive production in the outfield and believes they can extend Tucker long-term might be interested in a trade. And FanSided’s Adam Weinrib has suggested a deal that would bring Tucker to one such team, the New York Yankees.

After losing the Juan Soto sweepstakes to the New York Mets, the Yankees could use a hard-hitting outfielder. And if Tucker is truly available, Weinrib argued that it would be worth it for the Yankees to trade away their top overall prospect, Jasson Domínguez, who had an injury-plagued and unproductive 2024 season.

“If Tucker is in the game, the Astros are willing to return Cashman’s calls, and the left winger is happy about an extension, the uncertainty surrounding Dominguez must indicate availability,” Weinrib said. “Dominguez, Chase Hampton and Henry Lalane. Call it.”

In a package that also includes Hampton and Lalane, the Yankees would send their No. 6 and No. 11 prospects, respectively, alongside Dominguez, both of whom are pitchers. With Valdez potentially out this year or next, the Astros could look to bolster the pitching staff.

Ultimately, the Yankees might have a hard time parting with Dominguez, who is considered the future of the franchise after hitting four home runs in 31 big league at-bats in 2023. But after that past, there are suddenly question marks over his future season and the Astros may try to sign Tucker before he reaches an extension, this proposed trade battle between American League rivals could work.
