The Atlanta metropolitan area is bracing for possible severe weather this afternoon

Residents in the Atlanta area are bracing for potentially severe weather this afternoon, with heavy rain, damaging winds and a low chance of tornadoes hitting the area.

While there is no cause for alarm, meteorologists warn that the weather could cause disruption, particularly during the evening commute.

Current conditions

As of this afternoon, it will be raining steadily across Atlanta with temperatures hovering around 66°F. A narrow band of heavy rain has moved north from Fayette and Clayton counties, sweeping over Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and focusing on Buckhead and Sandy Springs. While lightning activity is minimal, isolated strong storms have been reported south of the Rome region.

The Storm Prediction Center has issued a Level 2 risk for areas south of Atlanta, including Heard, Coweta and Henry counties. While the chance of a tornado remains low, there is a 40% chance that a tornado warning will be issued for southwestern parts of Georgia. Damaging winds and small hail are also possible as the storm line moves through the region.

Timeline and precipitation

The threat of severe weather is expected to last until around 8pm this evening. Rain will continue into the overnight hours, with rainfall totals ranging from 1 to 2 inches across the area. In some locations there may be higher amounts in individual cases.

Tomorrow’s forecast brings a change in temperatures, with warm conditions in the morning turning colder in the afternoon. Thursday’s high is expected to reach just 48°F. Looking ahead, isolated showers are possible over the weekend from Saturday night into Sunday.
