The Blackhawks’ Joey Anderson clears waivers

12/9: Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman confirmed that Anderson successfully cleared waivers. According to a report from Scott Powers of The Athletic, Anderson will remain on Chicago’s active roster for the time being. The organization now has 30 days to assign Anderson to the AHL without having to put him through waivers.

12/8: The Chicago Blackhawks are in the lead Joey Anderson on waivers, according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman. Anderson has not played since November 23rd.

Anderson played in the first 12 games of Chicago’s season and rotated throughout the lineup – playing as little as 11 minutes or as much as 19 minutes early in the year. Despite the changing role, Anderson recorded just one assist, nine goals and 13 shots.

This is Anderson’s second full season with the Chicago organization. He started in the minor leagues last year but was quickly called up after posting 16 points in his first 14 games. He spent the rest of the season on the Blackhawks’ roster, playing 55 games and scoring 17 points. It was the longest time he has spent on an NHL roster in his seven-year professional career.

The New Jersey Devils originally drafted Anderson in the third round of the 2016 NHL Draft. After the draft, he spent two years at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, where he scored 64 points in 77 games before signing his first professional contract in 2018-19. Anderson scored six points in his first 13 AHL games – enough to earn a quick call-up, although he failed to cement an NHL role. This has now become a trend where Anderson does well in the minors but fails to break into the top flight. It’s one that has persisted through a move to Toronto in 2020 and a move to Chicago in 2023. History appears to be repeating itself once again, and Anderson will return to the AHL should he clear unclaimed waivers.
