The Bruins’ confidence didn’t waver despite a difficult start

The deficit after the first two periods was almost a death sentence for the Bruins, who were down 12-2 after the second intermission heading into Tuesday’s game in Calgary.

So a 3-1 deficit early in the third period seemed bad for the Bruins, especially against the Flames and goaltender Dustin Wolf, who had dominated in the Saddledome.

But even after Bruins captain Brad Marchand conceded a late goal in the second half, he liked the belief he saw in the locker room before they won 4-3 in overtime.

“It still felt like we had great confidence. A period is a long time in this league. Trust and belief are dangerous. If you have that, you can do it,” he said. “We’ve done that a few times recently. We’re starting to believe again that we can come back. … We have to be better at not getting into this situation.”

David Pastrnak was encouraged, whose overtime goal clinched the win.

“It was a big comeback on a not easy journey,” he said. “You play until the final whistle, every single game. Obviously we had some difficult times at the start of the season. It’s important for us to show that we can learn, not give up and fight.”

Bruins interim coach Joe Sacco called a timeout early in the second period after his team fell behind 2-0. He liked his team’s reaction.

“I was really proud of our performance in the third period. I thought our boys showed a lot of determination and an unconditional attitude. Good for them,” he said. “There was still a strong belief in the room that we could come back.”
