The Celtics use a tried and tested strategy to keep the Rockets off balance while winning

For the Celtics, it was all about their strength as they put together different lineups depending on who was healthy. That was evident again in their blowout win over the Rockets on Friday, which left them missing two rotation players in Jaylen Brown and Al Horford.

So C’s coach Joe Mazzulla changed his look. Just like in the Timberwolves’ win, the double-big lineup was a big weapon. But this time, instead of Horford and Neemias Queta, it was Kristaps Porzingis and Luke Kornet who changed the game for the Celtics against the Rockets. Porzingis finished the game with 11 points and five rebounds in 28 minutes, while Kornet had nine points, 10 rebounds and four assists in his 24 minutes.

“We were just able to help each other more at the rim and be a little more aggressive,” Porzingis told reporters. “Luke did a phenomenal job rebounding, dunking, finishing the ball and giving us second chances with offensive rebounds. So Luke was really good tonight. And I would say more confidence at the rim. That’s what we can do with the double bigs and it worked in the second half.”

The Celtics turned the game around in the second half. The Rockets scored 56 points in the first half, then only scored 30 in the final two quarters of the game. Part of that was the double-big lineup that was a big part of the win. This impression also helped at the beginning of the fourth quarter, when an 11-0 run completely destroyed the game. Additionally, Jayson Tatum was benched for this stretch.

Rockets star Alperen Sengun poses problems, as Porzingis saw early in the game after recovering from his ankle injury. So the Celtics put another big on Sengun, allowing Porzingis to protect the rim. The strategy worked as Kornet began the second half in Sam Hauser’s place, while the C’s got stronger defensively from there.

“It was good to just try to keep up physically,” Kornet said. “He is a very physical player. And then I think that the other person is somehow able to protect and show help and somehow be there when some kind of advantage arises. … I feel like our physicality was great, especially in the second half, and we just tried to compete and make it difficult.”

The double large lineup is also another reliable tool for Mazzulla and his staff. He can adjust his rotations based on matchups like he did Friday. Of course, the big men can mesh well together based on their strengths and styles. Because Horford and Porzingis are able to stretch the floor, the C’s can compare them to guys like Kornet and Queta.

Since the regular season is long, it’s also a time to try out different looks and lineups. The double big in general falls right in there as Mazzulla hit all the right buttons on Friday to help the Celtics win. Now the C’s are 2-0 on their four-game road trip. But it won’t get any easier when they take on the first-place Thunder in Oklahoma City on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.

“Sengun is one of the better big men in the league,” Mazzulla said. “And when you have help behind you and you can just get him to see dead bodies. You first have to be able to defend the point of attack. And so Luke could do that. And our guards did a great job in the pick-and-roll and eliminating the seam hook. And when they did, KP was there to overpower him. So it was a team effort. Defensively it was a good thing.”
