The Kansas City Chiefs are 12-1. That includes a record of 9-0 in one-score games.

Make it 10-0 now, as Kansas City secured its ninth straight AFC West title with a 19-17 win over the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday night. And like the other 10 close victories, the magic of the late game was palpable here.

This includes the kind you’d expect – Patrick Mahomes escaping pressure to continue a winning drive – and the kind that makes you believe the football gods are real and love Western Missouri barbecue. They’ve held off their division rivals with a blocked kick (the Denver Broncos), a botched snap (the Las Vegas Raiders) and now a game-winning field goal.

It felt inevitable. And as the ball bounced through the uprights, analysts and fans took to Twitter to express their exhaustion with a Chiefs team that keeps winning but never makes it easy.
