Super/Man: The Christopher Reeves Storythe award-winning documentary by filmmakers Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui (McQueen) will premiere Saturday, December 7th at 8:00 PM ET/PT on HBO and will also be available to stream on Max.

He recently won six Critics Choice Documentary Awards, including Best Documentary Feature, Superman is coming to HBO and Max after a wide release in theaters on October 11th. The film examines what time it is Superman Star Reeve persevered after a life-changing accident by using his fame to speak of hope and change our perception of paralysis, while remaining a dedicated activist, actor and filmmaker, devoted father, and loving husband to the swashbuckler, Dana Reeve heart of the family. The documentary chronicles Reeves’ personal and professional life before and after the near-fatal horse-riding accident in 1995 that left him paralyzed from the neck down, and uses Reeves’ own words as well as intimate references from his closest family and friends to paint a rich, nuanced picture Portrait of a man who refused to be defined by his physicality and proved that you don’t need tights and a cape to be a hero.

After becoming a paraplegic, Reeve used his reputation as Superman to fund medical research through his foundation and create initiatives to improve the lives of disabled people around the world. At the same time, he continued his career in the cinema in front of and behind the camera and dedicated himself to his family. His wife, Dana, heroically cared for him and continued to advocate for him after his death at age 52, only to tragically succumb to lung cancer just 17 months later. Reeve’s foundation was renamed the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation on the first anniversary of her death.

Illustrated with a variety of film clips of Reeve as Superman as well as his other roles and the films he directed, including never-before-seen, intimate home movies and a wealth of personal archival footage, the film also includes the first increasingly in-depth interviews filmed with Reeves’ children, as well as insights from his brother, his first wife Gae Exton and Hollywood colleagues and friends such as Susan Sarandon and Glenn Close. The film also includes extensive archival footage of Reeve with his best friend and Juilliard classmate Robin Williams, who, along with his wife Marsha, provided constant support to Reeve and his family.

Presented by DC Studios in association with HBO Documentary Films, CNN Films and Words+Pictures, the Oscar hopeful made its world premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Written by Ettedgui, Bonhôte and Otto Burnham, the film is produced by Connor Schell, Libby Geist, Marie Margolius, Mark Meatto, Andrew Ruhemann, David Moulton, Andee Ryder and Daniel Kilroy.
